Tell us your story

"Erik" inspired us to create Catch A Break! We hope to find other "high potentials" like Erik (or Erika).

Erik had a tough home life. School was his haven; he loved to learn. His grandparents had given him good advice: no matter what happens in your life, the more knowledge you have, the more choices you can create. And with your intelligence and drive, along with a little luck (a break or two), you can make a real difference in this world.

Erik connected well with his teachers. They encouraged him to attend a university, which he could afford through scholarships and other sources of financial support. Some of the challenges he faced early in life helped him to do well at school. He knew how to try hard even when "the chips were down". He was highly motivated, worked hard and cared deeply about being successful and making a difference. He also found mentors who helped him on his path.

Erik went on to make significant contributions, both personally and professionally. He graduated from the university without significant debt. He continues to help his community as well as his profession to become better through his efforts, long after graduation.

Without scholarships and financial aid, Erik would not have been able to achieve his college degree. Tell us your story. We want to hear from you!

About the Scholarship Program

We want to help you graduate from school debt-free. You must live on campus during your freshman year and achieve at least a 2.5 grade point average. We will meet with you after each semester of your freshman year. You must provide your transcript prior to the meeting so we can review your progress and goals.

After the conclusion of your freshman year, we will determine your eligibility to continue the award for the sophomore year. During each of your remaining three years you will be required to maintain a 3.0 GPA. We will meet with you up to twice a year in subsequent years to approve continuation of the award after review of your transcript and progress.

The award is intended to enable recipients to graduate debt-free following four years of study. In order to ensure a smooth transition to college life, students cannot work during their freshman year. Students are, however, encouraged to work during the summers and on a part-time basis during the second, third, and fourth years at the school in order to help cover school-related expenses, as well as to achieve the goal of debt-free graduation.

Catch A Break! award recipients must be Minnesota residents who demonstrate academic potential and financial need. The scholarship will apply after other financial aid is calculated - including federal and state grants, and other private and University scholarships and aid. The Expected Family Contribution (EFC), as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and outside scholarships will also be included in the financial aid package.

This scholarship program is administered by Scholarship America, the nation's largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance and other education supprt programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to religion, creed, race, color, sexual orientation, gender, or disability.
